“HEVEL HAVALIM” — “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity” — from Ecclesiastes is one of the most powerful and destabilizing verses in the Bible.
The Hebrew word HEVEL (“vanity”) does not indicate only “futility,” but something extremely fleeting, like an elusive breath. Like vapor: transient, uncontrollable.
Success? It passes.
Wealth? It does not remain.
Wisdom? It does not protect from death.
Pleasure? Momentary.
Everything we cling to does not endure over time.
And precisely from this awareness, another direction emerges:
to appreciate the present moment and allow what is there to emerge.
